"Who is Rett Thompson?"

“The Rock Boat Community Is Like None Other… and that’s what makes it special and that makes it cool for me to step in and tell that story…”

- Rett Thompson

Owner of MOVA (Masters of Visual Arts), Rett Thompson joins the BoatCast to chat about bringing the story of The Rock Boat to life via the recap video. Three-time boater, Rett discusses the process of capturing the entire Rock Boat in a short recap video. From choosing Andrew McMahon's "New Year Song" as background music to capturing the impact of returning to the boat after COVID; Rett highlights how the goal of this past recap video was not only to capture the best moments but to also capture the "family" aspect of the floating festival.  He shares his fond appreciation for Sithman

"Who is Alison Hammer? (The Sequel)"

Alison Hammer is a returns to the BoatCast for a Sequel. Ali is an author, reader, blogger, and a staple of the Rock Boat. She is the author of “You and Me and Us” and “Little Pieces of Me”. BoatCast Mark is admittedly a huge fan of Ali’s novels and recalls listening along with his wife to the Audible version of “You and Me and Us”. He finished “Little Pieces of Me” since the time of this recording. The BoatCast was thrilled to hear about the upcoming release of “The Beach Trap”, a collaboration written along with her best friend under the name Ali Brady. BoatCast Mark preordered the audible version months ago but Alison is kind enough to donate one advanced copy to our listeners. The BoatCast will match her kindness with a donation of a book to a new subscriber on our BoatCast YouTube channel.

Ali relives her favorite moments of TRB XXI - starting with her clever approach to getting a PCR test done at Walgreens, when they didnt allow “walk-ins”. She missed her hugs in the year of the Pandemic but made up for them about The Rock Boat this past year. She recalls the lovely surprise Bday party and talks of the cathartic early morning flag raising ceremony that celebrated of all those Rock Boaters that we’ve lost.

"Who is Kevin Baldes? (of Lit)"

Kevin Baldes of TRB XXII Headliner Lit, could not be more excited to join the Rock Boat community.

As lovers of such classic anthems as “My Own Worst Enemy”, “Miserable”, “Good Problem to Have” - and the list goes on), The BoatCast was pumped when they heard about Lit joining the Fam - but are even more excited after having the opportunity to sit down and chat with Kevin. Congratulations Sixthman, you did it again - you brought us an artist with amazing tunes but an even more amazing human being.

Kevin and his band have previously set sail with Sixthman’s KISS cruise and are excited for the engagement with fans, and adds that such feedback was what initially drove them to releasing “Miserable” as a single. As a lover of live music himself, Kevin is looking forward to catching other up and coming acts and snapping some live action photos with his camera.

Kevin discusses their new album, “Tastes Like Gold”, which releases officially in June, but already has some instant classic tunes such as “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah”, “Kicked Off The Plane”, and “Mouth Shut (feat.Adrian Young of No Doubt). The new album even has a collaboration with TRB XXI artists, American Authors. The BoatCast is proud to say that we’ve pre-ordered three copies of the Gold Vinyl (limited to 200 pressings). "Who is David Wimbish? (of The Collection)"

“There were songs that were new songs for us that had never been recorded that we played all three sets and by the third set, there would be a group of people singing along - that kind of interaction and feedback community does not happen anywhere else. It was so connective - it felt like we got to co-create with that community…”.

David Wimbish of The Collection, had not heard of The Rock Boat prior to TRB XXI. He admittedly looked forward to being on a cruise headed to Jamaica - but quickly found out that the most important aspect of the Boat is its community. David was completely blown away by the interactions had with fans who truly value music. The guys of the Boatcast share with David how word had quickly spread amongst Boaters about The Collection’s incredible stage presence and authenticity - and how that is continuing in the community for those who weren’t even on the Boat (ie BoatCast Mark’s family loves The Collection now)

David wrote the band’s newest single, “Won’t Stop Yet” in his cabin on the first night of TRB XXI - and if you haven’t heard it, it is an absolute gem. David treats listeners to a live rendition of the single during this episode.

Three-Time Rock Boater, Jack Weppler joins the BoatCast to discuss his Parris Mitchell project. Jack has been a recent staple of TRB, playing with his bands Night Without Cars & SCR (Sir Cadian Rhythm).

While on TRB XXI, Jack treated fans to a one-of-a-kind experience, in which he wrote a song using words volunteered from the audience. Jack opens up about his this creative process and the making of his recent release, “Superpower” and hints at his upcoming single, “I Never Said I’m Perfect” set to release April 22nd.

"Who are The Heavy Hours?

We just finished up a tour with Brett Dennen and every single show there’s a group of Rock Boaters that come up to us…”

TRB XXII will be the first Rock Boat appearance for Cincinnati quartet The Heavy Hours, but are already feeling the support from the TRB family.

Every year, fans find a new favorite band and the guys of the BoatCast and we are certain that news of their talent will soon be spreading like Wildfire once we set sail. The band talks about collaboration in their writing process music and their recent release, Gardens, which has been four years in the making. Speaking of collaboration, they are especially excited about the potential to interact with fellow artists, some of which they have been listening to for years.

“There was one instagram that went out from The Rock Boat and our name was right underneath of NEEDTOBREATHE - man that’s a surreal moment for us, not only playing on a cruise ship but seeing our name with a band we’ve been listening to for a long time - its just pretty cool …”

"Who is Jon Tyler Wiley? (of Jon Tyler Wiley & His Virginia Choir)"

“I went from playing Sister Hazel and Tonic songs in cover bands to being in lineups alongside those guys… the boat has been so special to me - I befriended the woman who is now on The Boat, I have so many friends that i’ve met from that community…”

- Jon Tyler Wiley on his first TRB experience, shortly after joining Melodime.

Jon Tyler Wiley, of Jon Tyler Wiley & His Virginia Choir, joins The BoatCast to talk all things Rock Boat and his new release, The Longing.

Jon reminisces the wild ride he had with Melodime on TRB and after TRB XX wondering if it was going to be his last boat. He recalls the joy of getting the call from Trae to be on TRB XXI. He talks the excitement of bringing his longtime friends from The Virginia Choir into the TRB community - and recalls watching Switchfoot with Thomas, his high school bandmate who used to cover Switchfoot songs - and the excitement of getting called up on stage by Jon Foreman to sing Hey Jude.

Jon talks his excitement about the upcoming Texafied JamFest (tickets just went on sale on 4/1 - reminder that tickets sell out fast, but one way to secure them and support a great cause are to sponsor the event. While there, he has challenged BoatCast Mark to a Torchy’s taco eating challenge in November while on a subsequent Podcast.

"Who is Clee Laster? (of Simplified)"

Clee Laster has been an incredibly productive musician in 2022…

Clee, lead singer of TRB fan-favorites, Simplified, makes a second appearance on the podcast to update Chris Rhoad, BoatCast Mark, and Eammon the Cousin on his busy 2022 - including details about the upcoming 2022 Texafied Jamfest!!!

Earlier this month, Clee put out an acoustic version of “Carolina Blue” with fellow Charlotte-based musician and good friend Cam (Of Good Nature).

He and his Simplified brothers recently released Fly Away” - an amazing jam that is perfect for spring/summer activities. The band is working on several more songs that will join this newest single on an upcoming EP. Check them out this summer at BoatYard Lake Norman, for a full-band show!

He talks EarthAngel Wings - Volume 1, a compilation album to benefit Children’s Hospital Colorado. His song “I Don’t Care” features fellow TRB fave Steve Everett - and there are several more TRB alums on the album. Buy it here to support a great cause!

Finally - and perhaps most exciting - Clee gives The BoatCast a deep dive into the history of Texafied - which TRB/SATS Boaters, the Conners, have put on with Simplified to support MD Anderson Cancer Center. The event will surely sell out. Clee likens Texafied to TRB on Land, given it’s immersive experience. He looks forward to hanging with his Texafied “Family” on Thursday for dinner and open jam. He warns that tickets sell out fast, but one way to secure them and support a great cause are to sponsor the event- and adds that sponsorship can start at $250 and can be creative (ie Michael B Moore is sponsoring the artists’ green room drinks). Chris Rhoad hints that we will be featuring several of the artists, as well as The Conners, on upcoming podcasts.

"Who are Nigel and Laurel Johnson

“No other festival, no other place would you have that interpersonal reaction - and since that time, Ken [Block] has always made a point of saying ‘Hi’ to me and giving me a big hug…. The Rock Bat is more than music and friends, it is a very very special place” - Nigel Johnson

Nigel Johson, and his better half, Laurel Johnson are seasoned Boaters; they have been on 11 and 10 boats, respectively. The Johnsons join Chris Rhoad, BoatCast Mark, and Eammon the Cousin to talk all things TRB!

Laurel and Nigel knew they had caught the Rock Boat fever as they were watching one of their favorite bands, U2, and found themselves preferring the more intimate experience of watching less mainstream, more intimate shows with TRB bands.

Having lost a son prior to his first Boat, Nigel tells his cathartic experience (in tears, holding hands with Joshua Jenkins - previously of Green River Ordinance Boat) and Ken Block pulling them aside to open up about his own significant loss.

The couple is great at spotting new acts (Mom Rock), and looking forward to seeing the return of NEEDTOBREATHE to the big stage for TRB XXII.

"Who is Dave LaGrande? (of Sister Hazel)"

“The Rock Boat Community has been very inviting, encouraging, very warm, and crazy - in a good way - at the same time. There isn’t another community that comes close to that inclusion …”

Dave LaGrande, keyboardist for TRB hosts Sister Hazel, joins The BoatCast to talk all things TRB!

Most boaters know that Dave LaGrande joined Sister Hazel to play keyboard on their new album and 10 years later, has been become a staple with the band. But did you know, he was actually a performer on a sister Norwegian ship (playing in the Spinnaker)? He praises the unconditional support from TRB community and memories of his first sail away show with the band and hanging up in The Haven. He loves collaboration and recalls sprinting on TRB XXI from the SH finale to Andrew Leahey and the subsequent adrenaline. Dave gives great advice first time Rock Boaters (check out the Brazilian Steakhouse apparently) and encourages them to go find “Your new favorite band” .. for Mark, favorite band honors will always go to Dave’s band, Sister Hazel

"Who is Philly Bri?" (Our BoatCast Bro)

When The BoatCast decided they wanted a big name for their 99th episode, there was only one person they knew they wanted to “bring the Hype” and party like it’s 99, - they turned to none-other than king of the Silent Disco himself, “Philly Bri”. Brian is BoatCast Mark’s Brother and Chris’ brother from another mother. More notably, Brian is a 6 time Rock Boater, who also has the legendary Gronk Cruise on his Sixthman resume.

“It’s so welcoming … whatever you are in the mood for, whatever you enjoy… it’s go with the flow… The most enjoyable vacation that is a combination of relaxation and exhaustion… you dont get much sleep. It’s non-stop music, a huge community, one big family…” reflects Brian on his TRB experiences.

Brian gives Sixthman the well deserved kudos for consistently bringing quality bands and a family reunion atmosphere. Listen as he talks about how his connection with his biological family and TRB family have grown together on the Boat.

Brian has been know to spice up a party with Will Hoge’s - “Whooooooa Oh…” (Even If it Breaks Your Heart) - so turn it up and get excited because this is an episode that you cant sleep on - unless of course, you are Eammon the Cousin who slept through recording)

"Who are Ana Pisani and Jess Alps? (of The Misflips)"

The Rock Boat is known for artists coming together and creating special moments. A similar moment occurred on TRB XXI, when Ana Pisani and Jess Alps jumped onto a flip cup team, “The Misflips” with fellow boaters and put on a show on the Sports Court.

Veteran Boaters Jess and Ana join Chris Rhoad, BoatCast Mark, and Cousin Eammon to discuss all things Rock Boat. Boaters may recall Jess from her “Beacon of Swag” or Ana jamming out to The Blue Stones and New Respects on TRB XXI. Eammon and Chris give BoatCast Mark flack (appropriately) for choking in the playoffs - and letting down the rest of “Team Isiah and the BoatCast”. Even a lil’ COVID couldn’t keep Jess from sharing her favorite memories in this episode!

A reminder that The BoatCast and Mom Rock are teaming up to support a great cause! Mom Rock has so graciously offered to raffle off a prized piece of Rock Boat XXI memorabilia. Additionally, The BoatCast will also be making a donation to the cause.

All proceeds raised from this raffle will be donated to the Kentucky Tornado Emergency Response (my.care.org). This organization provides emergency aid to the victims of the recent tornados that devastated the Midwest.

"Who is Mom Rock? (feat. Dave Finkelstein)"

This Special Holiday Edition of The BoatCast features TRB XXI alumni, Mom Rock.

Rock Boat 21 was retro video game themed, and Mom Rock absolutely crushed the game.

Word of Mom Rock’s electrifying performance on the Sports Court quickly spread among Boaters and they packed their subsequent shows in the Atrium and Bar City (yes, it's called Magnums now but it will always be Bar City). Listen to the behind-the-scenes story of how they were invited back onto the Boat for TRB XXII and how they became fast friends with Bowling For Soup (www.bowlingforsoup.com). Mom Rock surprises Superman, Dave Finkelstein with an invite to the episode to relive his favorite TRB moments with the band!

The BoatCast and Mom Rock are teaming up to support a great cause!
